Sakthiswaran Rajasekar reports:

All good things must come to an end!

Season 1 of Future Doctors had just begun in April 2009, and Episode 1 was outstanding! I can’t believe one year had gone by so quickly. It all started in a hostel room with 3 wannabes, we never expected it to go so far.

Future Doctors™ S3E6 FINALE

Future Doctors™ S3E5 Summary

Angelina Lim reports.

In our previous episode of Future Doctors under the theme “When Heart Attack Strikes”, we were lucky to have Mr S. Devandiran, Mr Senthilraj Retinasekharan and Mr Alan Na spare a few minutes of their time to present their respective topics.

Mr S Devandiran started the session with his topic “Angina Pectoris: The Differentials”. He differentiated stable from unstable angina and also touched lightly on the other forms such as Variant Angina and Syndrome X. He highlighted that eventhough there is a ST depression, particularly an ascending depression, in an ECG, it is NOT necessarily a sign of ischemia.

Next we had Mr Senthilraj Retinasekharan who gave us a brief overview of the risk factors, clinical picture, diagnosis, management, treatment and complication of ST-elevated Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). He compared the management guidelines given by Malaysia and Russia, concluding that they were similar with minor differences like giving statins in Russia which is not practiced in Malaysia whereas in Malaysia we use Clopidogrel which can replace aspirin in cases when aspirin is contraindicated. He elaborated a great deal on the medications used, their indications and contraindications.

On the “Diagnosis and Management of Non ST-elevated Myocardial Infarction” (NSTEMI) , Mr Alan Na based his presentation on the Malaysian Clinical Practice Guideline. He went through with us step by step from clinical symptoms to how we can come up with a final diagnosis of NSTEMI. He also stressed that the ONLY way we can differentiate Unstable Angina from NSTEMI was by cardiac markers.

Generally, all 3 presenters were very informative and well-versed with their respective materials despite the time restriction of 20 minutes.

Do join us in our final session of Future Doctors next week.

Future Doctors™ S3E4 SUMMARY

By Benedict Chong.

In our previous episode of Future Doctors, after taking a long break from Kursk Games, we were fortunate and glad to have 2 wonderful speakers, Mr. Sakthiswaran Rajasekar and Mr. Arveen Arasu. Both of them presented their individual topics under the common theme, Kidney Pathology.

Mr Sakhtis on UTI

The session began with Mr.Alan Na presenting to us with a short video on Anatomy & Physiology of the Kidney. It was indeed a good start to refresh our memories on the basics. Soon after that, Mr. Sakthis spoke on ‘What to do in case of Urinary Tract Infections?’. UTI according to him, is more common in females than males due to the difference in length of the urethra and the distance of the urethra from the rectum in both counterparts. He emphasized mainly on the treatment and prophylaxis of the disease.

Mr Arveen on AGN

Next in line, we had Mr. Arveen Arasu who gave his speech on Diagnostics and Management of Glomerulonephritis. Not even a slight unfortunate technical error prevented him from giving his short and sweet presentation, much to the amusement of the crowd. Overall, the session was carried out smoothly with Q&A sessions afterwards and refreshments were provided.

Stay tuned and do join us in our next Future Doctors session on WHEN HEART ATTACK STRIKES!

FLASHBACK: Future Doctors™ S3E3

By Benedict Chong.

Mr Ruzaik on GDM

In our previous episode with the theme “WHEN OUR BLOOD SUGAR RISES”, we were fortunate to have 3 mesmerizing speakers with us. The session started off with Mr. Mhm. Ruzaik, our 1st international speaker from Sri Lanka, who gave us a short yet comprehensive lesson on GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS, a common issue affecting most mothers during their child-bearing period. In his 30 min presentation, he touched on various aspects of the problem; clinical picture, diagnostic criteria and management of GDM.

Mr Devandiran on Diabetes Mellitus in Adults

Our next speaker was Mr. S.Devandiran who refreshed us on DIABETES MELLITUS IN ADULTS. An astonishing and worrying fact that 48% of adults above the age of 30 years old nowadays are not aware that they have diabetes due to early period of the disease which is asymptomatic. Hence, the importance of an early screening and repeated glucose tolerance measures must be taken if one is to be suspected. He also reminded us on the 3P symptoms; polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia as well as tiredness and sudden weight loss.

Miss Evelyn on Diabetes in Children

Last but not the least, our 3rd speaker, Ms. Evelyn Lau explained to us on DIABETES MELLITUS IN CHILDREN, the dangers, prognosis and treatment on  this 2nd most common chronic disease of childhood.

In conclusion, the session was conducted smoothly and it was apprehended with cheers from those who were present on that evening. Do join us in the coming session of Future Doctors next week before we take a 2 week break in conjuction with the upcoming preparations for the much anticipated Kursk Games 2010.
